Spartan Volleyball Update

October 05, 2022

Lady Spartans Go 1-1 at Triangular

On September 27th, Boyd County traveled to Summerland High School for a triangular vs Niobrara-Verdigre and the host Bobcats.  A tough Summerland team handled the Spartans with a well rounded offense and tough defense.  Unforced errors and miscommunications plagued the Spartans.  Set scores were 15-25 and 12-25.  Paige Drueke and Amelia Hoffman each recorded 4 kills.  Mazee Johnson led in digs with 15.  Leah Jockens had 1 block.  Brynn Almgren recorded 9 set assists. Drueke and Claire Reiman each were credited with 1 ace.

The second match of the night paired the Lady Spartans against an evenly matched Cougar team from Niobrara-Verdigre.  Boyd County started off with everything clicking and led by as many as 10 points early on.

N-V kept chipping away at the lead and stole the momentum in the comeback.  Neither team could close out, forcing extra set points.  The Cougars would eventually capture the set win 26-28.  After refocusing during the break, BC came out determined to play their ball.  Spartans grabbed the lead early and never trailed despite a comeback attempt forcing a BC timeout at 20-18.  Spartans rallied and took advantage of some NV errors, pulling out the win 25-18.  After a quick 0-3 charge by NV, the third and deciding set was all Spartan power.  Offense was clicking and an energized team was ready to fight for a win.  Spartans took the set 25-13.  Elizabeth Bernt served well and grabbed 4 aces in the match with Almgren adding 2 and Drueke 1.  Hoffman swung for 14 kills and Jockens added 6.  Jockens also added 6 blocks and Almgren 3.  Drueke and Bernt each had 9 set assists, Almgren chipped in 7 for the offense.  Defensively,  several had double digit digs with Drueke 19, Hoffman 14, Lanie Lechtenberg 13, and Johnson 10.

In the other gym, JV Spartans also got some court time.  They battled Summerland and lost in two sets 17-25, 19-25.  The match vs N-V went three sets, but would lose the deciding set; 24-26, 25-9, 7-15.

Lady Spartans host Burke, SD

Lady Spartans hosted state Class B ranked Burke on September 29th for a dual.  The always tough Cougar team proved too much for the Spartans, despite a strong effort to block, dig, and run the offense.  Boyd County battled throughout and the coaches were proud of their efforts despite the loss in 3 sets, 18-25, 13-25, 18-25.  Paige Drueke had 16 digs on the night along with 3 set assists and 3 kills.  Amelia Hoffman had 7 kills, 2 blocks, and 8 digs.  Leah Jockens had 5 blocks.  Almgren had 3 set assists along with her 4 blocks and 7 digs.

The JV Spartans got some good court time and had a battle of their own.  After dropping the first set 11-25, they settled down and fought back to win set 25-19.  Spartans kept set 3 close, but Burke prevailed in the end 21-25.  Boyd County ran out of steam in the deciding 4th set and lost 9-25.
