Lady Spartans Host Dual with Elgin Public / Pope John

September 14, 2021

September 9th Boyd County was host to the Wolfpack from EPPJ.  The ladies were fortunate to grab another full night of volleyball, playing C, JV and Varsity matches.  Each night on the court proves to be valuable as the team continues to gain confidence and build skills.  Spartan fans were out in force and added great energy to the gym for a fun night of volleyball competition.

The C match was close throughout in both sets.  In the first, EPPJ used a couple scoring runs to take the lead and not look back.  The second set was much closer as the Spartans got some offense going, but came up just short, 16-25 and 23-25.  Service points was led by Kaylee Bennett with 6 pts/2 aces and Sabrina Ziebro added 4 pts.  Elizabeth Bernt kept the offense going and recorded 9 set assists.  Brooklyn Eckert was productive with 3 kills and 16 digs.  Sabrina contributed 26 digs and Addison Birmeier also had 3 kills.  McKenzie Snyder got several touches at the net and recorded 3 blocks along with her 2 kills.

JV Lady Spartans played a talented team in EPPJ.  Tough serving and an offensive attack were difficult to stop.  The first set caught the Spartans a bit off and could never get a rally going.  Set two started off well with a quick 4-0 lead and was a close back and forth battle until the midway point when EPPJ went on a 12-point serving run and Boyd County couldn't break serve.   Lady Spartans lost in two 11-25, 15-25.  Brynn Almgren recorded 6 service pts/2 aces.  Lanie Lechtenberg led in kills with 2 and Hannah Widstrom added 1.  Addison Birmeier had 1 block.  Brynn was credited with the 3 set assists and defensively, Amelia Hakl had 6 digs with Emmie Holmberg adding 5.

The last match of the night would not disappoint.  Two evenly matched teams battled for 4 sets.  The atmosphere and excitement helped keep the court energy high and found the Spartans on top 25-22, 25-23, 27-29, 25-20.  Boyd County came out in set 1, served tough and worked the offense, taking the lead early and never looked back despite a late surge by EPPJ.  Set 2 saw the Spartans fall behind early forcing a time out at 8-13.  The girls would battle back to 22-20.  A missed serve by EPPJ and a couple side out points notched the win.  Set 3 was exciting from the start.  Both teams worked hard on every touch and played tough defense.  Boyd County fell behind early by as many as 4 and 5 points, but battled back to tie it at 17-17.  Spartans saw set point at 24-22, but EPPJ made it tough and pulled to 24-24.  After swapping points, extra points were required for the final score, with EPPJ taking set 3.  Set 4 required the Spartans to refocus and make every point count.  The lead would change several times throughout.  The offense was clicking for BC and defense was not letting anything hit the floor.  Boyd County would come out on top in the 4th to take the match 3-1.

Paige Drueke recorded 17 service pts / 2 aces, followed by Bentley Adams and Ryle Haun each adding 10.  Rylie Haun was credited with 45 set assists on the night.  A balance attack was led by Daydra Zeisler with 17, Haylie Carson 13, and Amelia Hofman 10.  Bentley Adams had 7 blocks and Daydra added 5.  Defensively Paige dug up 30 balls, Haylie added 27 and Amelia 25.
