Boyd County Spartans vs. St. Mary's Cardinals

The Boyd County Spartan football team opened their season on the road last Thursday at St. Mary's. The Cardinals received the opening kick and on their first possession drove all the way down to score. On the ensuing kickoff, Boyd County fumbled the return which set up a short field for St. Mary's to start their next drive. After falling behind 12-0 the Spartans looked like they were starting to settle down and play some football. Then there was about an hour and a half weather delay for lightning. After the delay the Spartans converted a short 4th down, then on the following play were called for a holding penalty. This seemed to set up a pattern for the Spartans the rest of the night. After having something go right, we'd be our own worst enemy and make a mistake. After the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 40-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

This 2019 team is very young and will look to bounce back this week against a quality Stuart team. After making some adjustments and having grown and learned from the loss, this team is looking to improve and show that they're a better team than that final score.

Kolt Boettcher led the offense with 32 yards rushing on only 5 carries. And Cory Koenig led the defense with 12 total tackles. Simon Arellano was credited with a sack.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
