Spartan Compete in NVC Tournament

The Boyd County Spartans basketball team entered the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament as the #7 seed, which matched them up with the #10 seed, Santee. The Spartans traveled to Santee for the first round game on Saturday, February 1st. The Santee Warriors were seeking revenge but the Spartans remained focused and kept their composure. Boyd County had to make defensive adjustments after Santee nailed 5 three pointers in the first half. The Spartans pushed the ball and hit big shots throughout the entire first half to put them up 43-24. The Boyd County Spartans did not let up in the second half to seal the win and advance to the conference quarterfinals with a 76-45 win. Highlights to the win were the Spartans collecting 48 rebounds and hitting 9 three point shots. Colby Hansen put up 35 points, followed closely by Joseph Hiatt’s 17 which included 5 three pointers. Hansen also grabbed 14 rebounds and Hiatt added 8. Hiatt and Kannin Ellwanger also each dished out 5 assists.

In the second round of the NVC tournament, Boyd County challenged the 13-4 O’Neill St. Mary’s Cardinals on their home court. The Spartans knew the quick and lengthy 1-3-1 Cardinal defense would cause offensive struggles for Boyd County. In the first half, defensive adjustments contained the Cardinals. The game was tied up at 24 at halftime before the Cardinals outscored the Spartans by 17 in the 3rd quarter. The Spartans continued to lack offensive delivery against the pressure defense. The Spartans were unable to close the gap, losing 36-59. The Spartans were balanced in the scoring column with just 4 players scoring. Jory Zeisler led with 14 points and Joseph Hiatt knocked down 3 three pointers. Hiatt led the rebounding category with 8 and Colby Hansen recorded 7. Additionally, Joseph Hiatt passed for 4 assists and collected 3 steals.
