The Boyd County Spartans basketball squad started the new year out with a win against the Santee Warriors on January 7th. The Spartans faced the quick, shooting team and happened to trail the Warriors at halftime by 4. The Spartans gave up 8 three-pointers in the first half, causing them to fall behind. After the break, the Spartans came out with a lot of energy and were able to force a high number of turnovers and capitalize on unforced errors by Santee. The primary source of the scorning efforts came from Colby Hansen who contributed a career-high 40 points. Jory Zeisler also added 12 and Joseph Hiatt 10. Hansen was also strong in the rebounding category, recording 10 while Hiatt had 8 while also pitching out 6 assists. The aggressive Spartan defense that forced Warrior turnovers was led by Hiatt, Kannin Ellwanger, and Cory Koenig as they earned 4 steals apiece.

The Spartans took on the Stuart Broncos on January 9th. The Spartans pulled off a big rivalry win by 23 points. Boyd County led by 9 after the first period and expanded that lead throughout the game. The Spartans played lock-down defense, causing the Broncos to shoot just 24%. Colby Hansen once again led in the scoring category where he put up 35 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Joseph Hiatt pulled down 6. Hansen also had 5 steals and Hiatt recorded 3. The Spartans recorded 9 blocked shots throughout the game, as well.
