Boyd County FCCLA Attends Leadership Workshop

By: Andrea Hipke, Public Relations Coordinator

On September 8, 2019, the Boyd County officer team, consisting of Joseph Hiatt, Alex Brestel, Kaci Mashino, Andrea Hipke, Trevor Brooks, and Kiryn Kayl, traveled to Kearney to participate in the FCCLA Fall Leadership Workshop. We departed Spencer at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Once we arrived in Kearney, we checked into the hotel and went out to eat at Applebee’s. After the meal, we went to the Big Apple and had a lot of fun bonding and playing mini golf. We ended the night with swimming in the hotel pool. Monday was filled with a variety of very engaging sessions. All students at this event heard from members of the Nebraska FCCLA State Officer Team, the State Peer Officer Team, and other chapter leaders about state and national programs, leadership development, and chapter management.

This year the keynote speaker, Dean Jacobs, challenged members to live a life of wonder and humanity through generosity, gratitude, dignity, curiosity, humility, respect, kindness and community. Nebraska FCCLA works to prepare students for future careers in Human Services, Education and Training, Hospitality and Tourism, and Visual Arts and Design. The University of Nebraska at Kearney Family Studies Department helped students learn about Passion for the Future by considering a future degree program focused on helping others. Dr. Christine Chasek presented Brain Storms: 12 Mind Bending Careers in Behavioral Health from the Counseling and Psychology Department at UNK.  After that we ate and attended a few breakout sessions before heading back to Boyd County. We learned a lot and have many new ideas that we can’t wait to take back to our chapter!
